Sometimes, a glamorous career conceals many of the most tragic stories. Lolo Jones, winner of both USA championships and the World Championships in hurdle events has reached her current position with a lot struggle and an immense amount of perseverance. Jones had the most difficult of lives being the daughter of an unwed mom who was also a mother to five kids. Her mother was constantly moving around as well as having lived in a basement church for a short period of time. Jones had to attend the same high school each year due to her nomadic lifestyle. Jones had to live away from mother at Theodore Roosevelt School to pursue her love of track. She lived at four different homes during her time in high school, so she could attend all of her classes at one time. Jones was one of the most skilled hurdlers when she first entered the college. Jones was the winner of the 100-meter hurdles at the 2002 NCAA Track & Field Championship. Additionally, she was on the team that finished second in the 100 meter relay. In 2003 and 2004 Jones took home the hurdles indoor event during the NCAA Championship. Jones had completed her college education in 2005, started to work hard in track. Jones won Torino Memorial in 2005, and also Ostrava and Heusden track events in the next year.

Brandt is a child of the Cape Town region. She grew up within Cape Town South Africa with her parents and siblings, immigrated to Auckland New Zealand when she was in her late teens. Brandt's talent was recognized in Auckland by the local casting director Brandt. The character was later reprised as the role in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
